Early maladaptive schemas, irrational beliefs about relationship and marriage instability
Cognitive variables are important factors in predicting marriage instability and divorce probability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of early maladaptive behavior and irrational beliefs in predicting marriage instability.
This was a correlational study. The statistical community of the study consisted of couples who had been referred to the wellbeing organization of Sirvan city and 200 persons were selected by accessible method. The research tools consisted of the Young Schema Questionnaire - short form, Romans & Debourd Relationship Beliefs Scale and Marital Instability Scale of Edward and Johnson. We used simple and multiple regression to analyze data and examine the hypotheses.
The findings indicated that early maladaptive schemas and irrational beliefs about relationship predict marriage instability independently and together.
Considering the role of cognitive factors in predicting marriage instability, these findings can be used in educational planning for preventing and decreasing divorce probability and improving couples relationship
