Suicide as a major public health problem worldwide known in the psychosocial analysis system, defense plays an important role in people's mental health. In various researches, emotional vulnerabilities such as emotional collapse have been identified as one of the risk factors for suicide. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between emotional defensive styles and suicidal thoughts among youth in the city of Boukan.
The research method was descriptive correlational. The statistical population of the study consisted of all youths (age range 20 to 35 years old) in Boukan city (N = 15299), of which 400 were selected by stratified random sampling method. Research instruments included the San Martini Defense Stress Questionnaire, Toronto Emotional Scale, and Beck's Suicidal Thoughts Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by correlation and multiple regression.
Pearson correlation showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between the developed style of thinking and attitudes and the positive and significant relationship between non-growth and psychological defensive styles and self-efficacy. Also, there is a positive and significant relationship between the difficulty in identifying emotions and the difficulty in describing suicidal thoughts and feelings, and there is a negative and significant relationship between objective thinking and self-concept thinking. The results of multivariate regression showed that psychological defensive style and emotional collapse explain the most variance of changes in mental health in young people.
It can be concluded that junior-leavers who use more unprotected and psychosocial defense styles are more likely to increase the amount of mental thoughts. The difficulty in identifying emotions and the difficulty in describing emotions has a positive relationship with young attitudes.
