The conservation status of Phlomis lurestanica
Phlomis lurestanica is an endemic plant from the mint family (Lamiaceae) in Iran, which is distributed in the mountainous areas of Lorestan. This is a perennial plant with rhizomes and stems up to 40 cm long. It is endemic to Iran. The conservation status of the species was defined based on IUCN Red List Categories. According to the field survey and plot sampling, Phlomis lurestanica occupies an area of 95 Km2, and the extent of occurrence is 1573.3 Km2. Based on the Area of Occupancy (AOO), population size, the regeneration, which is mainly vegetative through creeping rhizomes, and the quality of the habitat, the conservation status of this species is defined as endangered (EN). Field observations have shown that the lack of proper management and overgrazing are the main threats to this rare species. Determining protected habitats by Forests, Rangelands, and Watershed Management Organization, ex-situ conservation in Botanical Gardens, and plant natural resources gene bank are suggested to be considered for the conservation of this species.
