Abstract:

Beyhaqi, the renowned secretary of the Ghaznavid court, was a contemporary of Ferdowsi. In the history book he wrote after a career of being a court secretary for thirty-seven years, and revealing the details of the mannerisms and thoughts of the courtiers of the Ghaznavid dynasty, Beyhaqi, however, did not provide any indication to Ferdowsi and his interaction with Mahmoud's court. On the other hand, he cited the poetry of many poets for his most influential writing of history, yet he did not mention Shahnameh in his poetic evidence. Despite the consistency of the content of Shahnameh with the events Beyhaqi recounts in his historical account, he refrained from citing it, as if he deliberately ignored Ferdowsi and Shahnameh and did not see them worthy of mention in his history. This paper seeks to investigate Beyhaqi’s interaction with Ferdowsi and Shahnameh using an analytical-descriptive method, and collecting data in library research. This study shows that in Beyhaqi’s intellectual system, which resulted from rationalism and scrutiny, there was no place for myth, the mode Ferdowsi wrote Shahnameh, which was considered perplexing and unceremonious.
