The influence of colonization on the Algerian society in the light of Frantz Fanon’s ideas: A case study of the novel ‘Tomorrow is a New Day ‘by Bin Hadouqa
The onset of the contemporary era was a critical period of significance for most Arab countries. No sooner had these countries been released from the despotism of the Ottoman Empire than they either fell in the trap of European colonization or went under the mandate of Europeans. Algeria was one of the countries occupied by France. On account of its military supremacy, the French colonialism made drastic changes in the social structure of Algeria on the purpose of altering the genuine identity of that nation. the Algerian intellectuals, scholars and men of letters tried to react to such changes. In his works, Algerian novelist Abdel Hamid bin Hadouqa reflects the social areas that the French colonialism sought to change. This descriptive-analytical study, relying on Frantz Fanon’s theory, seeks to detect the major social changes reflected in Bin Hadouqa’s novel ‘Tomorrow is a New Day’ as well as the solutions offered by the author to confront such colonial measures. The present study has concluded that a number of structural changes, including the creation of a colonization-dependent social class, emergence of a poor social class, and alteration of social foundations especially family and culture, were made in the society. Bin Hadouqa's strategy is to form a republican government consisting of parties, to benefit from theintellectuals’ opinions, to grant individual and social rights to women, and to return to the indigenous culture and genuine identity
