Comparison of academic achievement of Shiraz medical students

Abstract:
Introduction

One of the most important motivations of human beings is the motivation of progress which leads to better performance and academic success and this is an important indicator for the usefulness of the higher education system.

Methods

This descriptive-analytical study consists of two parts. In the first part, which is cross-sectional; As a sample, 323 students were selected by stratified random sampling method in several stages and the standardized Hermans Progress Motivation Scale was used as a data collection tool. In the qualitative part, 40 students whose motivation had decreased; They were selected by random sampling method and a number of oral questions were asked through interviews and their dominant answers were used in the discussion.

Results

The mean of this motivation was 81.7 with a standard deviation of 9.03. The frequency of low motivated students was 151 (46.7%) and the frequency of high motivated students was 172 (53.3%). The results did not show a statistically significant relationship between the mean of this motivation with age (0.18), educational level (0.3) and marital status (0.82) but with gender (0.003) and residence status (0.002). ) Had a statistically significant difference.

Conclusion

According to the results, most students, with a slight difference, had high motivation, which is not entirely desirable and requires planned educational interventions. This motivation was higher in girls and people living in the house. The main reasons for reducing this motivation These included lack of internal motivation, lack of adequate leisure time, economic problems, fear of future careers, lack of proper relationship with professors, insufficient attention to their self-esteem and separation from family. It is suggested that educational systems pay more attention to the factors affecting motivation and provide solutions to overcome educational barriers.
