Investigating the principles and guidelines of passive defense in the architectural designing the underground city of KordOlia
The architectural heritage of the Islamic Iran is a demonstration of the values, according to those, the appropriate prototypes of architecture, heeding sustainability and continuity could be discerned. One of the successful examples of the kind could be enumerated as the phenomenon underground cities. Cities shaped in response to security, religion Evidently defensive and strategic constrains could be enumerated as the most crucial issues in shaping these cities. According to religious courses, security has been the most important factor in establishing civilization. The current paper, with emphasizing the architecture of the underground city of KordOlia, and analyzing the architectural structure of its prototypes, aimed to adjust the aforementioned structure with the principles of passive defense and set for to analyze its categories. This paper, deals with the qualitative nature and descriptive analytical method and with emphasis on the method of library and field research on the architecture of underground cities. After reviewing the principles of passive defense architecture and adaptation and analysis in the field of underground and Man Made cave architecture, sustainable patterns of this type of architecture have been extracted. The result of this paper demonstrate that the architecture of underground city of KordOlia, ranked among the Man Made cave, have necessarily been formed according to the principles of non-defensive architecture, propagating to location finding, establishment, form, circulation spaces, residence spaces and their respected geometry had a sustainable entity and in comparison with other Man Made cave architectures, it can be a desirable and sustainable model for continuity in new urban structures.
