Studying the characters of neighborhood space to prevent urban crime Studying the characters of neighborhood space in preventing urban crime (A case study of zone 3 Sari city)

Evidences show that the quality of physical units correspond with the social behaviors in urban neighborhoods. So each neighborhood has its own characters which can influence the incidence of a crime and its prevention. This research aims to investigate the role of social and physical components of neighborhood to prevent the occurrence of crime in the zone of 3, Sari city. The methodology of the research is based on descriptive and analytical approaches which are accompanied by a fieldwork to complete the given questionnaires. Also the data and information were collected from different sources. To identify the characters of neighborhood space eleven social and physical components were defined. Also 270 samples were selected using Cochran model. The regression analysis and Pearson correlation were applied t investigate the research hypotheses. The results showed that among eleven components, the component of environment quality with the score of 0.281 has the highest influence preventing crime. There is a direct and significant correlation among the components of quality of environment, form, accessibility, social cohesion and awareness with prevention of crime based on Pearson test. Also the test revealed that there is a negative and significant correlation with occurrence of crime in the zone of Sari.
