The Historical relationship between Religion and Philosophy
Author(s):
Abstract:
Philosophy, according to its definition, is aimed to approach the truths of phenomena as they are and to the extent human capability allows. Unlike theology, philosophy is neither bound to defend the revelation nor committed to be compatible with Shariah. As far as the issues related to the immaterial and extrasensory abstracts are concerned, philosophy often results in what are manifested in religious teachings as well as in the theologian’s views. Except for rare cases, where human thought revolts against the status qua and transcends the prevailing traditions and beliefs considering them as hurdles in the way of its progress, philosophy often surrenders to the solutions imposed by the dominant religion and prevailing costumes. Hence, philosophy is interested in what are addressed by religions rendering the review of the evolutions of philosophy –at least in areas of common interest – an essential part of any deep religious study. Similarly, the major philosophical problems- that if not answered -will render human life hollow and meaningless and condemn the man to frustration are debated by religious experts before encountering their philosophical answers.The paper, first, addresses the characteristics of religion and philosophy then examines the historical relations between them.
