A Critique of the Undemonstrability of God's Existence
Author(s):
Abstract:
Impressed by physical and experimental science some ashariah and mystic (Gnostic) theologians as well as some contemporary intellectuals argue that philosophical reasoning are at all impossible or lack a positive function. This paper presents a critique to this approach. First, it reviews the possibility of cognition of God and the different schools of thoughts in this regard. Refereeing to the views of deniers’ philosophical reasoning, it then reviews their arguments. Their most important argument is the impossibility of raising a case to prove God because there is no cause and nature for the existence of God. The final reason of the opponents is their resort to traditions (naql) which is also appraised in the paper. The author’s hypothesis in this paper is that the generalization of burhan (reasoning) to burhan inni and shebh limmi could be used as a case for the proof of God’s existence.
