THE EFFECT OF ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS IN THE SUPPRESSION OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS
The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect of antihypertensive drugs on aortic atherogenesis in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. In enalapril and nifedipine treated rabbits aortic atherosclerotic plaque involvement was significantly decreased (p<0. Oland p<O. 05, respectively) as compared to the control group. However, in hydrochlorothiazide treated rabbits aortic atherogenesis was marginally inhibited, whereas in clonidine treated rabbits it was similar to the control group. These results suggest that the inhibition of atherogenesis in enalapril and nifedipine treated rabbits is independent of hypercholesterolemia and may be relevant in the selection of antihypertensive drugs, provided their protective effect can be demonstrated in future clinical trials as well.
