Background And Aim
There are much evidence implicating environmental factors such as diet regimens containing high animal proteins, alcohol consumption, chemical carcinogens … etc. to be among the risk factors of breast cancer and are involved in the production of reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species can peroxidize, lipids, reduce enzyme activities and damage DNA, hence the play an important role in the pathogenesis of cancers.
Materials And Methods
We investigated Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and Glutathione reductase activities in the whole blood samples taken from 2 age-matched groups, 50 healthy women and 50 patients suffering from breast cancer (BC).
Results
The rate of GPX and GR activities in BC patients were significantly lower (p<0.001) than those of control group. We found an age related reduction in the activity of GPX and GR enzymes (p<0.05).
Conclusion
The results of our study have shown a gigher Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and decreased GPX and GR activities, which lends support to the oxidative stress hypothesis in carcinogenesis. GPX and GR enzymes with diminished activities may not be adequate to detoxify high levels of H2O2 into H2O, and dangerous 0OH radicals are produced. Therefore, administration of antioxidants may be helpful in the management of BC patients. However, further elaborate clinical studies are required to evaluate the role of such antioxidant enzymes in BC management.
