Frequency of Causes of Children Convulsion Among 1 Month to 12 Years ald Children Admitted to Besat Hospital

Children convulsion with the prevalance of 4-6 cases out of 1000 is the most common neurological disorder in pediatric medicine. The study was done to determine causes and factors led to children convulsion. The population under study consisted all 1 month to 12 years old children who were admitted to Sanandaj Besat hospital between April 2000 until July 2001. This study was descriptive and included 200 children who were selected by sensus method. Data was collected by referring to the patient documents and recording information in the check list. Analyse of data was done by SPSS win software and descriptive statistic. According to the results of this study, fever with frequency of 115 cases (57.5%) was the main cause of convulsion. Other causes of convulsion included epilepsy 62 case (31%), menangitis 7 cases (3.5%), electrolyte disorder (hypocalcemia and relative hypoglycemia), 6 cases (0.3%), head injury 4 cases (2%), poisoning 2 cases (1%), encephalitis, DTP vaccine and brain tumor 4 cases (2%) together. The frequency of convulsion in boys (61%) was much higher than girls (39%). Convulsion frequency in 1-6 years old children was more than other age groups. Mortality rate in this study was 0.5% (one case). Convulsion is not a serious disorder itself but because of the relatively high frequency of those group of convulsions which need diagnosis and special theraputic sccheudle, it is essential to take history and do complete clinical and paraclinical exams.
