Social and Economic Reasons of Theft in Kermanshah

Abstract:
Theft is an old crime of the history of human societies. Considering the fact that the rate of this crime is increasingly high in Kermanshah, this article aims to study the social and economical reasons of that, and emphasizes more on security and police-related elements. The sample population of the study includes thieves (of houses, stores, and cars) which are in Dizel Abad jail or Kermanshah. To reach at a more intact result, all the prisoners of theft were chosen to fulfill the questionnaire; and hence, the simple size is equal with the sample population. In theoretical approach, considering the scientific background of the research, a complex framework of pressure theory of Merton, cultural transition of Sutherland, social control of Hirschi, hot spot zones of Shaw and McKay, anomie and family structure of Goad, and life style theory were chosen, in order to reach at the objectives of the study. According to the findings of the study, a majority of thieves socially and economically relates to low classes, and subsequently lack the requirements to access their goals. It indicates that indicators such as relative poverty led them to commit crime. Hence, to control theft, instead of concentrating on thief who is the outcome of social and economical situation of society, structural reforms must be put into account.
