Abstract:
The historicism of the Qur’an was suggested by Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid. He argues that that the Qur’an is a cultural product and is historical concerns only one phase of the Qur’an. For he says that the Qur’an has passed two phases: development and culture-making.In the former phase, the Qur’an is assumed as a cultural product touched by the culture in which it came into being. In the latter phase after it has changed into a dominant text, i. e. the culture-making phase, the Qur’an is developed into a standard by which other texts are assessed and from which they receive their legitimacy. In what follows, the author goes to criticize the above theory from several angles: criticism of the so-called scientific method, the criticism of Abu Zaid’s approach to the essence of text, and that of the basic principles of the theory.
