    Honey, curcumin, ginger, and Nigella sativa are known for their antioxidant, immune stimulation properties, and wound healing effects. This study was conducted to determine the effect of these compounds and their mixture on the bone healing of the radial bone defect model in rats. One hundred and ten radial bone defects in 55 healthy male rats were randomly divided into 11 groups (10 rats per group). Groups 1-5 received honey, curcumin, ginger, and Nigella sativa orally by gavage, and groups 6-10 received the same materials locally by rubbing them on the sutured skin. The bone repair effects of these materials were evaluated by histopathology and biomechanical examinations. Using honey, curcumin, ginger, and Nigella sativa exhibited a beneficial effect to promote bone healing in this study. The biomechanical and histopathologic evaluations showed that the honey (oral), the mixture of honey and curcumin (oral), and the mixture of honey and Nigella sativa (topical) groups exhibited significantly better results on the 52nd postoperative day compared to the other groups.

    Treatment of infected burn wounds remains a challenge in burn units. Silver-sulfadiazine (SSD) is the most commonly used topical antimicrobial agent in managing these wounds. We aimed to accelerate the healing of burn wounds by combined application of ovine acellular peritoneal matrix (OAPM), honey (H), and ovine fetal skin extract (OFSE). Sixty-four standardized burn wounds were created on the dorsum of 16 rats and were subsequently inoculated with Staphyloccocus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After 48 hr, the wounds were surgically debrided and received either physiologic saline (control group) or SSD, OAPM+SSD, OAPM+H+SSD, OAPM+H+OFSE+SSD. The healing wounds were evaluated for size, bacterial counts, histopathology, and biomechanical properties on days 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 after surgery. All treatments had effectively reduced the level of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa on wounds compared to the control group by day 3 and 7. The wounds treated with combined application of OAPM+H+OFSE+SSD demonstrated considerable inflammation reduction, fibroplasia, complete re-epithelialization, and wound contraction together with significantly lesser scar tissue formation. Treatment with OAPM+H+OFSE+SSD showed superior biomechanical properties of the healing wounds. The findings suggested that the synergistic effect of dressing the wounds with OAPM, H, and OFSE was a very effective approach in accelerating the healing process of the experimentally induced infected full-thickness burn wounds in rats.

    In this study, we compared the effects of Calendula and Alpha ointment in the treatment of burn wounds and compare its results with silver sulfadiazine (SSD). Seventy-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups, and similar burn ulcers were produced on anterior surface of thigh of rats. The first group of rats no treatment was applied, base gel was applied topically to group II, in groups III-V, Alpha, SSD and Calendula preparations were applied, respectively. Wound healing, contraction and histopathological evaluation were evaluated at the end of 7, 14, and 21 days. Alpha ointment was equally effective as Calendula gel, and had better efficacy compared to SSD for all markers of wound healing at days of 7, 14 and 21. Alpha and Calendula preparations are less expensive drugs and significantly improve the quality of wound healing and scar formation and are more appropriate treatment choices than SSD. Therefore, we recommend them as alternative to SSD, especially in patients with low economical backgrounds or in those who show adverse reactions to SSD.
