In the la s t few years, using chemical insecticides to control the malaria vector has caused environmental pollution and resi s tance to chemical insecticides. This s tudy aimed to inve s tigate the chemical analysis of essential oils of Thymus carmanicus Jalas by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and toxicity activity again s t the major Iranian malaria vector, Anopheles s tephensi. The essential oil of Thymus carmanicus Jalas was prepared from dried leaves using the hydro-di s tillation method. Gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS) was used to analyze and identify thyme essential oil compounds. Bioassay was performed using World Health Organization (WHO) s tandard te s t. The T. Carmanicus Jalas essential oil consi s ted of 15 compounds, with Carvacrol (61%), Thymol (6%), and β-caryophyllene (5%) being the major components by volume. The LC50 and LC90 of thyme oil were 20.37 and 41.38 mg L-1 at 24h after application, respectively. At 24h after application, significant differences were observed between the toxicity of 5%, 20%, 25%, 40%, 50%, and 80% concentrations of Thyme essential oil (P<0.05). The 80% concentration of Thyme essential oil exhibited 100% toxicity again s t A. s tephensi larvae at 24h after application. T. Carmanicus has a rich source of bioactive compounds for use as a mosquito larvicide.

The water safety plan is a systematic approach that aims to ensure the quality of water distributed to consumers. In 2004, the World Health Organization issued a statement implementing the water safety plan. The plan is underway in Iran. The purpose of this study is to review the studies conducted from 2004 to 2020.
Materials and MethodsPresent article is a systematic review study to search for keywords in a combination of "water safety plan" (WSP), "Iran", "Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points", (HACCP) and "water" in international databases including: PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, as well as national databases include: Magiran and SID.
ResultsIn the initial search, 671 articles were found that after screening based on the Prisma checklist, 15 articles were included in the study for further review. The results showed that in the implementation of WSP, the highest score is related to Qom city with 68.64% and the lowest value is related to Khoy city with 17.5%. Improvement and upgrade program, support program development, and review of WSP courses have received less attention. Low staff familiarity with WSP, insufficient team composition and lack of coordination between them in holding regular meetings can be the reason for poor implementation of WSP in Iran.
ConclusionThe full implementation of the water safety plan controls the risks in the water supply system and reduces costs, as well as improves and increases the quality of water distributed to consumers.

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type of bacteria resistant to chloramphenicol (CHL), erythromycin (E), and sulfamethoxazole (SXT) antibiotics from untreated wastewater effluents to receiving river.MethodsIn total, 32 samples were taken from eight sites located in the raw wastewater to the downstream of the receiving Ghotor river in Khoy city. Resistant microorganisms were studied through modified HPC method and CLSI standards. Different and specific colonies were selected and re-cultured in R2A culture medium and enough colonies were used for DNA extraction. Bacterial 16sr RNA target gene was amplified and sequenced. Pseudomonas sp., Comamonas sp., and Thiobacillus sp. were predominant bacterial species identified in water samples. Also, antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) including sul1,
ermB, and cmlA1 were tracked by PCR.ResultsThe average total number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) increased in the downstream (2.4×102 to 2.6×104 CFU/100 mL). The comparison of the results related to the river’s upstream and downstream also indicated a significant difference between ARB and ARGs contents (P<0.05). The average number of bacteria resistant to SXT, E, and CHL antibiotics was obtained to be 2.3×104, 2.3×104, and 3.4×104 CFU/mL, respectively. Finally, the evaluation of water revealed that only the aeration lagoon was able to decline the number of CHL-resistant bacteria (88.9%) while this process increased the number of SXT- (51%) and E- (16%) resistant bacteria. The lowest and highest percentages of the identified genes were related to ermB (12.5%) and sul1 (81.25%), respectively.ConclusionAccording to the results, wastewaters play an important role in releasing ARB and their antibiotic resistance genes to downstream of Ghotor rivers in Khoy city.Keywords: Heterotrophic bacteria, Sulfamethoxazole, Chloramphenicol, Erythromycin, Polymerase chain reaction, Wastewater, Rivers -
BackgroundSuccessful waste management programs are linked to internal factors, SW (strength and weakness points), and external factors, OT (opportunities and threats), and at the macro level are grounds for sustainable development. Studies may be related to David’s study which presented a method to quantify strength, weakness, opportunity, threats (SWOT) analysis.MethodsIn this study, designed to investigate recycling and managing dry residues in District 1, threat factors were studied and internal factors evaluation (IFE) and external factors evaluation (EFE) matrixes were scored. Tehran Municipality District 1 has 10 subdistricts and 26 neighborhoods. The dry residues from Municipality District 1 that currently weigh approximately 2678 tons per day.ResultsResults showed that WO strategies for improving weaknesses and employing opportunities available in District 1 are ideal. After constructing the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM), WO strategies were prioritized.ConclusionThe evaluation matrix of internal and external factors in the city of Tehran indicated that waste management has weak internal factors. Meanwhile, evaluation points of external factors showed that, in the current situation, SWOT could achieve good results. Waste management systems are involved with different multi-disciplinary factors; therefore, trends in the development of waste treatment technologies have been led by various social, economic, and environmental drivers in Tehran.Keywords: Solid waste management, SWOT, Strategic management
