    Objectives

This study aims to evaluate the effect of a family-based sensory diet on the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in students.

    Methods

This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental method with a control group and a pre-test and post-test design. The statistical population included all children with ADHD between the ages of 6 and 12 years who were referred to the Hasti, Bahar, and Masir Sabz clinics in Tehran City, Iran in 2021. Using the convenience sampling technique, 30 kids were selected and randomly divided into the experimental and control groups. The Wilbarger sensory protocol was used in the experimental group, which underwent a family-based sensory diet intervention (3 times a week, 45 minutes per session). The Conners’ parent form scale and the Wechsler intelligence scale for children 4th edition (WISC-IV) were used to measure the study variables. The SPSS software, version 20 was used to conduct the statistical tests, which included the analysis of covariance.

    Results

The results of the covariance analysis showed that the family-based sensory diet program had a substantial impact on the mean post-test scores for the two groups (P=0.001).

    Discussion

For students with attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder, and impulsivity caused by ADHD, implementing a family-based sensory diet can be useful in lowering these symptoms.

In addition to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and impulsivity, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder also have major problems with sensory processing. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of family-based sensory diet on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test design with control group and one-month follow-up test. From the statistical population of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder aged 6 to 12 years referring to Hasti, Bahar and Masir Sabz treatment clinics in 1399 in Tehran, 30 people were selected by available sampling method and randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. They underwent 12 sessions of family-based sensory diet program intervention, which was derived from Wilburger's sensory protocol and were tailored to each child's sensory status, 3 days a week and each session lasted 45 minutes. To measure the variables, Wechsler Children's Intelligence Scale and Conners Parent Form Scale were used and to assess the sensory status of children, a sensory profile questionnaire was used. Statistical tests included repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test.

    Results

The findings showed that the mean scores of post-test and follow-up test for attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity in the experimental group decreased and the results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that this decrease was significant and stable.

    Conclusion

Sensory diet intervention is a new and effective intervention in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and improves the symptoms of these children and their performance in various social situations

    Introduction

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a family-centered sensory diet program on the impulsivity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

    Materials and Methods

This is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The study population included all children with ADHD aged 6-12 years in Tehran, Iran referred to the clinics of Hasti, Bahar, and Masir-e Sabz in 2020. Of these, 30 children were selected using a convenience sampling method and randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control. The intervention group underwent 12 sessions of a family-centered sensory diet program, 3 days a week, each for 45 minutes based on the Wilbarger protocol. The used tools were the Wechsler intelligence scale for children-Fourth Edition to test intellectual ability and the Conners’ parent rating scale to diagnose ADHD in children. Independent t test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used in SPSS software v. 20 for data analysis.

    Results

In this study, the mean age of participants was 9.56±4.38 years, including 11 girls (36.6%) and 19 boys (63.3%), and the mean age of mothers of these children was 34.23±6.9. The mean impulsivity scores of children in the intervention group decreased and the results of the ANCOVA showed a statistically significant difference in the mean posttest scores between the two groups (P=0.001).

    Conclusion

The family-centered sensory diet program has a positive effect on the impulsivity of children with ADHD. It is recommended that therapists use the sensory diet program as a complementary therapy along with other therapeutic interventions.

    Introduction

In children with severe spastic cerebral palsy, the presence of primary reflexes prevents normal movement patterns and delayed treatment. Wrapping technique is one of the methods used to reduce muscle tone. Wrapping technique is one of the methods used to increasing upper extremity function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of this technique on the reduction of spasticity and increase the range of upper extremity in children with cerebral palsy.

    Materials and Methods

In this experimental and pilot study, 20 children {mean (±SD) age = 4.35 (±1.18) year} were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. In both groups, the passive ranges of motion and muscle tone (external shoulder rotation, shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, and wrist extension) were measured by goniometer and modified Ashworth scale before and after the intervention. Both groups received regular rehabilitation services, and the intervention group took wrapping along with those services. Independent t-test was used to examine the pretest and posttest to differentiate between the two groups.

    Results

The results of this test showed an increase in the passive range of motion in the intervention group compared with the control group. Our study also suggested tone reduction in all intended muscles, except in wrist extensor, during 12 treatment sessions in the intervention group.

    Discussion

In summary, the use of the wrapping technique is an effective method for reducing muscle tone and increasing the passive range of motion.

    Introduction

Addressing behavioral problems helps facilitate social interactions and community acceptance of children with cerebral palsy. This study examines the prevalence of behavioral challenges in children with cerebral palsy.

    Materials and Methods

A hundred children with cerebral palsy {mean age (±SD)=8.47 (±1.86) years} took part in this study. To measure behavioral disorders, Rutter’s children’s behavior questionnaire was used. Raven test was employed to measure IQ of the children. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between behavioral disorder whit IQ and age. One-way ANOVA test was applied to evaluate the types of behavioral disorders in 4 groups of cerebral palsy.

    Results

The results have not shown any significant relationship between the total score of the Rutter form with intelligence and age (r = 0.08 and 0.09 Pv> 0.05). Aggression, hyperactivity, and attention deficit disorders between the athetoid group and different groups of cerebral palsy were shown to be significant. There was no marked difference in depression, social incompatibility, and antisocial behaviors among different groups of cerebral palsy.

    Conclusion

The results of this study show that there is a disparity in challenging behaviors in different groups of cerebral palsy. To improve the quality of life of these groups of children, further studies are recommended to figure out intervention processes to address their challenging behaviors as much as possible.
