In recent years, audiovisual translation (AVT) has become omnipresent in different parts of the world; however, dubbing humor restrictions may hamper the translation in that maintaining the humor in the target language (TL) requires a high level of knowledge. Although several studies have attempted to describe the distribution of translation strategies, few systematic attempts are made to analyze the employed AVT strategies in humor series. The present study analyzed the Persian humor expressions’ appropriacy and their translated versions in English through a qualitative study. To this aim, the dominant strategies used to render humor in the translated versions of 3 dubbed Iranian series (i.e., Shamsolemareh, Chimney, and Medical Building) were analyzed. Furthermore, the typologies of the employed audiovisual humor in the series were analyzed. Data analysis illustrated that clumsiness and parody were the most frequent humor typologies used in the series. The 3 strategies of omission, word-for-word translation, and free translation were the most frequent ones. In conclusion, the results indicated the failure to accommodate the Iranian series’ humorous level, preventing the target audience from appreciating humor. Findings can contribute to the improvement of the quality of humor translation.

Demonstrating their idiosyncrasies in a culture-specific way, cultural aspects are one of the most demanding tasks in cultural transfer, especially in rendering audiovisual materials. This study investigated the applied strategies in rendering taboos from English to Persian in 10 dubbed action Hollywood movies by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). To this aim, the original and dubbed versions of the movies were collected from Soroush Sima Company, which is a highly official audiovisual translation (AVT) company in Iran. Afterwards, the original and dubbed versions of the movies were compared seeking for the culture-specific items (CSIs), especially taboos. Then, the taboo expressions were extracted from the original versions and compared with their translations in the dubbed versions. Finally, the results were interpreted through SPSS, considering Venuti's (1995) strategies in translation studies (i.e., domestication and foreignization). Analysis of the chi-square results indicated χ2 (27, N = 10) = 83.49, considering **p < 0.05. Besides, analysis of the data revealed that deletion, with the frequency of 60.26%, was the topmost applied strategy in the rendition of the taboo expressions. Moreover, reduction of the dubbed run-time of the movies indicated that scene omission was another strategy to censor and prevent injection of harmful thoughts into the Islamic society of Iran. Thus, Iranian audiovisual translators mainly tend to localize, or domesticate, translation of taboo expressions while dubbing. Findings contribute to a proper translation of CSIs, especially taboos in AVT, mainly in the dubbing field.

International Journal of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Volume:7 Issue: 25, Spring 2019, PP 101 -114The increasing impact of audiovisual media and film industry in particular has led researchers to think of audiovisual translation strategies. Huge investments in film industry need global markets. Hence, there is a need for qualified translations and systematic studies dedicated to this area are in great demand. This study aims to investigate translation strategies adopted in the translation of two awards-winning dramas. The selection criterion is based on winning international awards or compliments received in the target community. Although some may argue that these successes are rooted in the selected movies’ ideologies, the role of an accurate translation in transferring such elements is undeniable. The present study analyzes the translation strategies employed in the subtitled version of the following films: A Separation and I Daniel Blake. The theoretical framework of the current study is based on Gottlieb’s (1992) Classification of Interlingual Subtitling. The obtained results depicted that except dislocation and transcription, all Gottlieb’s strategies were applicable. The results also showed that the film’s genre plays an influential role in translators’ decisions. As these films were warmly welcomed by the target audiences, the frequent translation strategies will be useful and practical for the future of audiovisual translation industry. Keywords: Audiovisual Translation (AVT), Subtitling, Gottlieb’s Model, Film, Awards-Winning Dramas

An example of this function of language is taboos. Rooted in the worldview and beliefs of different nations toward specific categories, the rendering of taboos can pose a plethora of linguistic and cultural problems. Since cinematic products constitute a major channel for transfer of culture-bound elements, including taboos, the translation of these items in the form of subtitles and dubbing is of paramount importance. However, this research area has not been adequately addressed in literature. This study seeks to explore the strategies of translators in rendering of taboos in dubbing of English movies to Persian through a descriptive approach. For this purpose, the Persian dubbing of three contemporary English movies was selected and after comparison with the original version, the translation strategies used in translation of taboos were investigated according to Sharifi’s categorization of taboos. The results of the study suggest that direct translation of taboos and compensation were the most common strategies in translation of swear words while with regard to other types of taboos, manipulation and the use of non-taboo equivalents were the preferred strategies. The extent of application of these strategies, however, varied in IRIB and private dubbing institutions, with the latter showing a tendency toward using indirect, watered-down strategies in translation of western taboos into Persian. Keywords: audiovisual translation (AVT), dubbing, subtitling, taboo, translation strategies
