Background
The drug-induced liver injury (DILI) has a wide range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic liver enzyme elevations to cirrhosis. Herbal dietary supplements may be beneficial to reduce the risk of hepatotoxicity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of clove extracts on humoral factors in rats with hepatotoxicity induced by thioacetamide.
Materials and MethodsIn this experimental study, rats were divided into nine groups (10 rats per each). The Control group received no treatment. The Sham group was treated with oral administration of distilled water (0.5 ml) for 21 days. The positive control group received thioacetamide (50 mg/kg for three days) intraperitoneally. The clove group was divided into three subgroups and given daily oral administrations of 50, 150, and 300 mg/kg of clove hydroalcoholic extracts (for 21 days). Rats in the experimental group were divided into three subgroups and subjected to 50 mg/kg thioacetamide injection after receiving hydroalcoholic extracts of clove (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg, respectively) for 21 days in the last three days. All rats were sacrificed after 48 hours to measure liver function parameters (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total plasma protein, and albumin).
ResultsThe rats that received thioacetamide showed liver damage by increased serum liver biomarkers and decreased levels of total plasma protein and albumin compared to the control group. The different doses of clove extract resulted in a significant improvement of liver damage by reduced serum liver enzymes levels and increased total plasma protein and albumin.
ConclusionOral administration of the different doses of the clove extract (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg) for 21 consecutive days could significantly improve the changes associated with serum biomarkers of hepatotoxicity.

Artemisia argyi and Houttuynia cordata Thunb are common herbs in most regions of China. In order to test their composite effect as additives on fish, the effects of their extracts mixture on growth performance, antioxidant activity, serum and hepatic lipid levels, and gut bacteria in juvenile grass carp were evaluated. 180 fish were divided into 9 tanks with 3 replicate tanks per treatment, and fed with a control diet (A0) or one of two treatment diets containing 500 (A1) or 1000 mg/kg (A2) mixture of extracts, with equal mass of A. argyi and H. cordata, for 8 weeks. Water flow rate was 8.0 L/min, and water quality parameters were in normal range. At the end of feeding trial, fish weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and survival rate showed no difference among all groups. Significantly higher catalase (CAT) activity and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content were observed in A1 and A2 groups. Serum triglyceride content was much lower in the A1 group and total cholesterol was lower in experimental groups compared with the control group. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the hepatic lipid droplets were smaller in the experimental groups. High-throughput sequencing identified 10 predominant phyla from gut samples, and Fusobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the most dominant groups. Compared with the control group, in A1 group operational taxonomic unit (OTU) number, species richness (Chao1, and ACE), and α diversity (Shannon index) were higher, and gut bacteria composition was altered in A1 and A2 groups at phylum and genus levels. These results indicated that the extracts mixture of A. argyi and H. cordata can increase antioxidant activity, lower serum and hepatic lipid levels, and improve gut bacteria composition, which can be used as a green additive for grass carp.

This study aims to get a comprehensive evaluation of the growth promoting effects and the hypoxic stress relief potentiality of Moringa oleifera aqueous extracts. Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings were arbitrarily allocated into five duplicated fish groups (30 fish tank-1). The fish groups were labeled according to the M. oleifera aqueous extract dietary inclusion level (G1:G5). MOAE had fundamentally promoted tilapia growth. Serum total protein levels were considerably higher in the M. oleifera fed fish, whereas the levels of liver enzymes diminished significantly in G5 fish. Additionally, the dietary M. oleifera resulted in a noticeable hypoglycemic effect together with a pronounced decline in the antioxidant activities. The use of M. oleifera supplemented diet decreased the hypoxia-related stress as conveyed by the gradual descent in the serum cortisol levels of the hypoxic-stressed tilapia. This study proposes the potentiality of M. oleifera aqueous extract as a growth promoter, antistress and antioxidants. It also validates its safe application in commercial tilapia culture. Future study is required to comprehend the influence of this plant extract in relieving chronic stress and its possible toxic effect as well. Feasibility study for its commercial usage is required too.

تاثیر عصاره های کونوکارپوس (Conocarpus erectus L.)، پالونیا (Paulownia fortunei) و مخلوط آنها (%50 کونوکارپوس+ %50 پالونیا) بر کارایی رشد و تغذیه، فعالیت آنزیم های گوارشی و ایمنی غیر اختصاصی ماهی قزل آلای رنگین کمان (Oncorhynchus mykiss) مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت. ماهیان به 4 گروه تغذیه ای با رژیم غذایی %0 (T1)، %1 عصاره کونوکارپوس (T2)، %1 عصاره پالونیا (T3) و مخلوط آنها (T4) به مدت 30 روز تقسیم شدند. 180 قطعه ماهی (09/4±57 گرم) به طور تصادفی در 12 آکواریوم 70 لیتری قرار گرفتند که به 3 تیمار و 1 شاهد تقسیم شدند. عملکرد رشد ماهیان در همه تیمارهای تغذیه شده با عصاره های گیاهی در مقایسه با شاهد افزایش معنی دار آماری داشت (05/0p<)؛ بیشترین مقدار در تیمار 4 بدست آمد. ضریب تبدیل غذایی (FCR) در تیمارهای آزمایشی نسبت به تیمار شاهد بهبود یافت. سطوح آنزیم های گوارشی افزایش معنی داری در تیمار 3 ماهی تغذیه شده با %1 عصاره پالونیا در مقایسه با سایر تیمارها و شاهد نشان داد. اختلاف معنی داری بین تیمارهای آزمایشی مختلف و شاهد در سطح پروتئین و آلبومین سرم خون ماهی وجود نداشت (05/0p>) در حالیکه مقادیر گلوکز و هموگلوبین در ماهیان مصرف کننده عصاره گیاهی افزایش معنی داری آماری داشتند. نتایج این آزمایش نشان داد که استفاده از عصارهای کنوکارپوس و پالونیا در جیره ماهی قزل آلای رنگین کمان منجر به بهبود رشد، آنزیم های گوارشی و ایمنی غیر اختصاصی خون شود.

Fish were divided into 4 four experimental groups fed diets with 0% (T1), 1% of conocarpus extract (T2), 1% of paulownia extracts (T3) and their mixture (T4) for 30 days. One- hundred and eighty fish (57.00± 4.09 g) were randomly stocked in twelve 70-L Aquarium assigned into three treatments and a control group. The growth performance was significantly increased in all herbal extracts fed fish compared to the control (P < 0.05); the highest value was obtained by treatment 4. The food conversion ratio (FCR) was improved in all experimental treatments compared to control. The digestive enzymes levels revealed significant increment in fish fed 1% Paulownia extract (T3) in comparison with the other treatments and control. There were no significant difference in protein and albumin levels of fish blood serum in different experimental treatments and control (P > 0.05). While, glucose and hemoglobin levels were significantly increased in fish fed diets containing plant extract. The results of this experiment showed that the use of conocarpus and paulownia extracts can improve the growth, digestive enzymes and non-specific immunity of the O. mykiss.

در این مطالعه اثر استفاده ی همزمان پرتودهی و پوشش خوارکی صمغ دانه ی ریحان حاوی عصاره ی مرزنجوش بر ویژگی های میکروبی فیله ماهی شیپ (Acipenser nudiventris) مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. پس از تهیه ی فیله ی ماهیان، تمامی تیمارها با 2 درصد صمغ خوراکی دانه ریحان و غلظت های 2 و 4 درصد عصاره ی مرزنجوش پوشش دهی شده و آنگاه در معرض دوزهای 3 و 4 کیلوگری اشعه گاما قرار گرفتند نمونه ها سپس در دمای 4 درجه سانتی گراد به مدت 25 روز نگهداری و در فواصل معین پنج روز از نظر میکروبیولوژیکی مورد ارزیابی قرار گرفتند. نتایج حاصل از آزمون بار باکتریایی کل و باکتری های سرمادوست نشان می دهد تا روز 10 نگهداری هیچ کلنی باکتریایی در تیمارهای حاوی 3 و 4 کیلوگری اشعه (تیمار 4 و 6) مشاهده نگردید و دارای رشد کمتری نسبت به سایر تیمارها می باشند. همچنین میزان رشد باکتری های سودوموناسنیز در این تیمارها کمتر می باشد. بررسی های باکتریایی انتروباکتریاسه نشان می دهد که تمامی فیله های حاوی اشعه و عصاره، تا روز 10 نگهداری فاقد کلنی های این نوع باکتری بودند (P<0.5) و تیمار 4 دارای روند رشد کمتری نسبت به سایر تیمارها می باشد. در این پژوهش، علاوه بر اشعه گاما عصاره ی مرزنجوش افزوده شده نیز در کاهش بار میکروبی فیله ها موثر می باشد به صورتی که در تیمارهای پرتودهی شده ی حاوی بالاترین میزان عصاره (4 درصد)، رشد تمامی باکتری های مذکور روند کندتری نسبت به سایر تیمارها دارد. بنابراین با توجه به نتایج حاصل از پژوهش استفاده از دوز 3 کیلوگری اشعه گاما به همراه 4 درصد عصاره مرزنجوش می تواند جهت افزایش ماندگاری فیله ماهی شیپ موثر واقع گردد.کلید واژگان: عصاره گیاهی, اشعه گاما, نگهداری در شرایط سرد, تغییرات کیفیIn the present research, the effect of simultaneous use of irradiation, with edible coating of basil seed gum and extract of marjoram on microbial properties of Fringebarbell sturgeon fillet was studied. Treatments were 2% edible coating of basil seed gum, 2 and 4% marjoram extract and 3 and 4 kGy gamma rays. Treated samples were stored at 4ºC and evaluated periodically for microbial evaluation. The result showed that total viable counts (TVC) and psychrotrophic counts in treatments containing 3 and 4 kGy radiation (treatment 4 and 6) had a lower growth rate than other treatments. Pseudomonadaceae bacterial growth rate was also low.
