    Background

     Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) is a common household plant with needle-like leaves and white flowers that belongs to the family Lamiaceae and has various medicinal properties including ailments of hair and scalp, cardiovascular, nervous disorders, etc., In the current work, we have focused on formulation and evaluation of 1% hair lotion incorporated with methanolic extract of R. officinalis.

    Materials and Methods

     The aerial parts of the plant were extracted with methanol and then the nature of phytochemicals were identified by chemical tests. It showed the presence of proteins, amino acids, fats and oils, steroids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, volatile oil, and vitamins. The extract was formulated to a suitable hair lotion and then evaluated for its various quality control parameters. Finally, the lotion was evaluated for hair growth promoting activity on C57BL/6 mice, using water as control and 2% minoxidil hair lotion as standard.

    Results

     It was observed that the formulated 1% herbal hair lotion passed all the evaluation parameters and showed a significant hair growth promoting activity than the standard drug-treated animals.

    Conclusion

     Although several researches have been carried out on the rosemary, an investigation on formulation of hair lotion adding the extract of the aerial part of the plant is for the first time. Since our formulation exhibited an excellent activity, it can be well thought out to be an alternative to the commercially available hair growth promoters with a lot of unwanted effects.

    Background

     Pressure lesions are chronic wounds causing the development of infection and inflammation into deeper structures and finally necrosis. In Persian medicine, Alkanna orientalis (Boraginaceae) has been used for centuries as a naturally derived remedy for managing lesions. A cross-sectional pilot clinical trial was conducted to assess the wound healing effect of an ointment made of chloroform extract of roots of A. orientalis (CERAO).

    Methods

     Sixty patients (36 men and 24 women) diagnosed with bedsore staging 1-2 entered the study for one year. They were divided into two groups of control and treatment with equal proportions. The control group received conventional treatment from the hospital, including irrigation serum, mupirocin, phenytoin ointments, and gauze dressing. After rinsing and cleansing with normal saline, in the intervention group, patients received a thin layer of CERAO once daily for four weeks. Clinical outcomes were measured at weeks 2 and 4.

    Results

     Recovery assessment was carried out by measuring wound area, days of epithelia formation, and complete wound closure. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P-value <0.05) in terms of the mentioned criteria. The recovery percentage was 26.7% and 60% for the control and treatment groups, respectively. In the control group, 16.7% of the study population experienced the development of wounds, while in the intervention group, wound progression was not observed.

    Conclusion

     The results of this pilot study indicated that the clinical efficacy of CERAO could be promising and a replacement for conventional treatment of pressure ulcers.

    Background

    Medicinal herbs remain a vital source of new chemical entities, instead of the attempt of pharmaceutical companies using combinatorial and synthetic chemistry techniques for developing new drugs.

    Objectives

    The primary aim of review is to highlight the different phytochemcial ingredients and their therapeutic potential in Cynara scolymus

    Methods

    Cynara scolymus, commonly known as artichoke is a rich source of polyphenolic compounds, mainly caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids, isolated in the polar extracts of the plant, together with the polysaccharide inulin. The worldwide scientific databases were comprehensively and systematically reviewed and summarized.

    Results

    The beneficial effects of artichoke in experimental studies include antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypercholesterolemic, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, gastrointestinal protectant, reproductive, and anticancer properties. Studies with artichoke conducted in experimental animals reported no mortality or significant toxicity. Increasing attention is being paid to developing herbal medicines as a newly emerging treatment for the welfare of the patients in the last few decades.

    Conclusion

    The present review detailed the versatile therapeutic efficiency and diverse application of C. scolymus. This medicinal herb has been appropriately used in conventional medicine for a long and helps cure various ailments.
