    Background

Swimming pools are recreation and sport sites where the lack of safety and health can have severe adverse effect on public health. This study aimed to identify and assess health and safety risks using HAZID and ALARP techniques in the different parts of the swimming pools.

    Methods

In this applied study, health risks were identified by field observations and environmental health questionnaire consisting swimming pool environmental health checklist, safety of equipment and so on. Then, the risks were categorized and corrective revisions were proposed. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 19.

    Results

After data analysis, 41 types of safety hazard and 35 types of health risk (potential and existing) were identified. A total of 7 work units and 6 jobs in swimming pools were classified, and 52 types of health risk and 69 types of safety risk were identified, assessed, and classified. After providing corrective measures, according to the ALARP principle, unacceptable risks were eliminated and 64 risk were classified as acceptable.

    Conclusion

According to the results, most of the health risks were related to the swimming pools area. So that health training course for swimmers and increasing health culture have an important role in controlling health risks. Changing the attitude of swimming pools managers and personnel towards health, safety and environment (HSE) issues also have an important role in controlling health and safety risks.

    Background

Accidents caused by children’s play equipment are a severe health threat to them. Implementing the requirements of the safety standards is necessary to ensure the safety of such equipment. The current study aimed to determine the general safety of playground equipment in general parks in Gonabad City, Iran. We also compared the level of the general safety of this equipment with national standards.

    Methods

This cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted in all the parks of Gonabad City during the autumn and winter of 2017. The required information on the playgrounds in the public parks of this city was collected by a checklist. The checklist was designed based on the general safety of playgrounds standards (national standard 1-6436) in 124 items.

    Results

On average, 9.55 of standard requirements were not implemented in examined parks. Moreover, none of the studied parks fully complied with current standards. We observed fractures, cracks, or deformation in equipment, rough surfaces with the risk of injury, hazardous conditions due to inappropriate design that could harm children, as well as the lack of middle aggressors. These were non-compliant components observed at least 70% of the studied parks.

    Conclusion

Removing points with fracture and defective points, and improving the level of children’s playground is essential. The obtained data also emphasized the need for periodic safety audits and the improvement of the safety level of children’s playground equipment.

    Introduction
One of the major concerns in laryngeal laser surgery is the risk of airway fire. The introduction ofwrapped tubes and metal tubes has reduced the fire hazards. However, these tubes are expensive and do not provide convenient access to the surgical field. There are few laboratory studies addressing the resistance of polyvinylchloride tubes against ignition in the given circumstances. Nevertheless, its safety should be approved in clinical practices.
    Materials and Methods
This  retrospective studyevaluated the airway management on 1024 patients undergoing laryngeal laser surgery. The data collection included the information about the type of endotracheal tube (ETT), mode of ventilation, and airway hazards (e.g., tube ignition).
    Results
Polyvinylchloride tubes and conventional positive pressure ventilation was applied for most of the patients (84.1%). The tube cuff was pierced with laser beam in 22 cases (2.5%). However, there was no case of ETT ignition or airway fire.
    Conclusion
Polyvinylchloride tubes can be safely used in this subset of surgeries pending meticulous attention to the safety recommendations.

    Introduction

Pre-hospital emergency systems provide service by Franco-German and Anglo American models. This study was carried out to compare the Iranian emergency medical service (EMS) with the two models regarding timing and equipment.

    Methods

In this cross sectional study, response time, scene time, and transport time to hospital as well as ambulance equipment of five hundred thousand Tehran EMS recorded missions, during one year, were compared with Franco-German and Anglo Americanmodels, trying to determine the pattern of EMS delivery in Iran.

    Results

The mean response time, scene time, and transport time to hospital were 15.00 §10.88, 18 §11.48, and 15.00 §11.20 minutes, respectively. The mean response time (p<0.035), scene time (p<0.033), and transport time to hospital (p<0.015)were more than the standard time. Percentage ofambulances quipped with automated external defibrillator (45%, p<0.001), ventilator (2%, p<0.001), disposable splint (0%, p<0.001), and wheelchair (0%, p<0.001) were very far from standards.

    Conclusion

The pattern of EMS delivery in Iran was a combination of Anglo American and Franco-German system.

    Introduction
The carry of heavy backpacks by school children may be associated with several potential health consequences. The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of body weight represented by school backpacks and other related factors.
    Materials And Methods
The cross-sectional study has been done in eight primary schools in Yazd city in which a total of 783 students’ boys (217 subjects in boys’ private schools and 566 ones in boy's governmental schools), grades 1 to 5, were studied. Measures included body mass and school bag weight of students and then the relative backpack weight (RBW) was calculated as percentage of body weight.
    Results
The average backpack weight was 4.6 kg (range, 1.3 kg to 20.6 kg) and represented 12.9% (range, 5.5% to 37%) of the subjects’ body weights. In private schools, about 43.7% of the students carried backpacks weighing less than 10 percent, 38.4% between 10 – 14% and 17.9% of the students 15 percent or more of their body weights versus 66.2%, 23.5% and 10.3% in governmental schools, respectively. The majority of students carried their bags over one or two shoulders and only 4% used roller bags. The contents of backpacks were mainly text books, exercise books or test books.
    Conclusion
In conclusion the result of this study indicated that the students of private schools carried heavier backpacks than those of governmental ones and therefore it appears to be reasonable to lighten the load of backpacks and educate students for carrying correctly school backpacks.
