Decline in the Power of Women in Garshasbnameh
Author(s):
Abstract:
Zabolestan was ruled by Koorang Shah, who had a wise, creative, strong, and young daughter. She helped his father in ruling the kingdom. The king had given her the freedom to choose her husband. She had a maid, who deceived her and weakened her self-confidence. The girl saw Jamshid Shah, who had fled the tyranny of Zahhak, in a party given by the king. Deceived by the maid, she overlooked her independence, lost he balance, forgot her wisdom and power, and accepted to marry Jamshid. When the king found it out, he was angry at her, but he forgave her when he saw her tears. They had a baby, who was named Garshasb. He closely resembled his father, Jamshid. Koorang advised Jamshid to run away. Jamshid did so and was a while later murdered by Zahhak. The king’s daughter was so hopeless and helpless that she committed suicide. Garshasbnameh is an end to the era when man and woman were equal. The balance of power was disturbed by the woman herself. The woman collapsed from inside, not because of her weakness but due to her uncontrollable love and affection.
