Is there any association between fat intake pattern and abdominal obesity in adolescent girls?

Background And Objective
Nutritional status during adolescence plays an important role in human life cycle. This cross-sectional study aimed to association between fat intake pattern and abdominal obesity of female high school adolescent in Tehran.
Materials And Methods
In this study 210 adolescent girls aged 14-17 years from high school of Tehran enrolled. Food intake data obtained by on 24-h recall, 1-day food record and a food frequency questionnaire for girls. Waist and hip circumferences were measured and waist -to-Hip Ratio (WHR) were calculated. WHR >0.8 was defined as abdominal obesity. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS program.
Results
Mean of waist, hip circumferences and WHR was 69.91 cm, 94.12 cm and 0.73 respectiveley. Abdominal obesity according to WHR>=0.8 was 7.1% and according to WHR>= 95th percentile was 5.2%. Means of energy (kcal), fat (gr), intakes of energy derived from total fat was 2044(kcal), 80.14(gr), 34.29%. Mean weakly frequency intake of dairy products, meat and fats are high among adolescent. There was a significant correlation between weekly frequency intake of fatty stew and WHR.
Conclusion
Based on the results, quality and quantity of fat intake pattern wasn’t appropriate. Indeed in nutrition intervention programs for health promotion and particularly improvement of nutritional status in this age group is necessary to induct.
