An Analysis of Characterization in Jami ́s Versified Story of Salaman and Absal

Abstract:
The poetic narrative of Salaman and Absal, composed by Noured din Abdurrahman Jami in the ninth century, is an invaluable opus that it´s characterization within the structural entirety of the story merits due attention and reflection. According to Honayn Ibn Ishaq, Jami has opted for some type characters and challenged their discourse, deeds, and thought in a way he has made his mind up and eventually put an end to the story. Salaman, the main character, and Absal, king and sage as the minor characters constitute the structure of the narrative. Human idiosyncrasies, moral, social, and divine attributes of protagonists are depicted conspicuously and their unparalleled psychological, intellectual traits in opposition to the incidents are manifested. This article is an attempt to analyze as well as interpret the diverse aspects of characterization in Jami´s Salaman and Absal work. On the one hand, each character is thoroughly analyzed and the types, functions, and destinies of characters will be portrayed. On the other hand, the relevance of story elements such as dialogue, action, setting, scene etc. with the characters is illustrated.
