Use and Relevance Judgment of elements (Title, Abstract, Keywords and full text) in document selection and evaluation: An approach based on Riding's cognitive style analysis

Purpose
This study aimed to investigate the impact of cognitive style on documentrelevance judgment in document selection and evaluation process.
Method
This is an applied research conducted through a survey method. Humanities &social Science – Pure and engineering science Students of Ferdowsi University ofMashhad, Iran, were selected as samples for Riding’s cognitive style analysis inorder to distinguish two cognitive style groups (Holistic and Analytic).
Findings
The results of the research demonstrated that there were significant differences between the two cognitive style's grading of relevance judgment across the sixsimulated work tasks. Furthermore, although there was no significant differencebetween Humanities & social Science – Basic & engineering science samples inusing document elements, Holistic mostly used full text, while analytic ones usedtitles and abstracts in their relevance judgment. It is expected that the results of thestudy can help search engine and web designers enhance a user-personalizedinterface in order to support interactive information retrieval systems.
