Exploring the Individual and Situational Antecedents of Ingratiation and its Impact on Employee's Career Progress (The case of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad)
Abstract:
Although، the organizations come to design and implement the career management systems and promotion strategies for employees who have a high level of productivity and performance but، previous studies indicate the influence of political processes and behaviors including ingratiation on employee''s professional success. In this regard، this study is aimed to investigate the predictability of employees'' career progress through ingratiatory behaviors and to explore the two types of individual and situational factors which affect ingratiation. The research questionnaire was designed using the various measures of previous studies reaffirming the validity and reliability and was responded by a 218 pcs sample of the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. In doing so، the obtained data was analyzed by conducting a structural equation modeling in Amos v. 20. The results indicated that the individual factors i. e. locus of control and Machiavellism have a significant influence on ingratiatory behaviors. While، among two variables of leadership style and task ambiguity only the influence of leadership style on ingratiation was confirmed. In addition، the significance of the positive relationship between employees'' ingratiation and career progress was confirmed.
