Conflict management styles and workplace stress in academic libraries

Abstract:
Purpose
To examine the relationship between conflict management styles and workplace stress in the central libraries of public universities in Tehran. Design/Methodology/Approach: The views of 50% of the staff working at 186 service points were randomly selected and surveyed. Two questionnaires, both modified versions of those frequently used in other projects, were used to collect data.
Findings
Only about 1% had experienced a high level of stress, the level of stress experienced by the greater majority (84%)has been low. They assert that a domination style of conflict resolution is more frequently used by their superiors. A significant relationship was found between conflict management styles (mastery, cooperation, compromise, avoidance and tolerance)and job stress.
Conclusion
The findings can provide a sound basis for identifying relationship management styles and the level of workplace stress in libraries.
