Abstract:
has benefited from outcomes and advantages of this technology. One of the most important recent advancements in health care industry has been IT development taking place during the past 25 years (1).Some technologies in health system include: Mobile-health, Hospital Information System (HIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS), and Speech Recognition Technology. Lack of access to modern IT in health sector by health care providers and patient's treatment processes can lead to numerous problems such as lack of convenient access to existing information in Medical Records, reduction in efficiency of health centers, high expenses due to repetitive tests, reduction in effectiveness costs of provided services, lack of high quality data, decreased patient satisfaction in health centers, lack of integration between data, slow process of discovering the cases of disease outbreak, reduction in the quality of health care provisions, lack if analysis or improper analysis of outputs of provided services.IT has a significant effect on health care organizations, health professionals functioning, patient treatment, and management of treatment and various diseases (2).Using IT for treatment, increase in its quality, ensuring correct diagnosis and information transmission and exchange with patients is known as an important strategy to improve and increase of health care services which can prevent medical errors. In this respect, according to a research done by a Vanderbilt University research team in 2012, entitled "Health Information Exchange Can Save Money by Reducing Admissions from the Emergency Department" it is stated that "in the annual balance of the university affiliated hospital, 1.95 million dollars profit has been gained from which 97.6% has been due the reduction in emergency admission because of electronic health data exchange" (3).Jason (2007) in his article "Developing Common Methods for Evaluating Health Information Exchange” stated that "health information exchange systems lead to higher quality and improved public health as well as less expenses and more patient and health provider satisfaction (4).Carrel (2011), in his article " Benefits of Health Information Exchange (HIE)", stated that "health information exchange in health care centers leads to reduction in medical errors, less duplicate tests and experiments, improvement in health provider's performance, improved quality of health care services, more access to data and patient's outcomes, improved quality of care, improved patient safety, availability of data and information in emergency times, and enhancing communication between agencies (5).Lammers et al. (2014), in their study entitled “Does Health Information Exchange Reduce Redundant Imaging? Evidence from Emergency Departments" stated that "electronic health information exchange leads to patient's clinical data exchange between health providers and consequently brings about high quality services, less expenses, less unnecessary care and reduction in duplicate images in the emergency." This was the first study to find empirical evidence for the anticipated benefits of electronic health information exchange (6).
Conclusion
IT enhances health care services in the health system, especially in remote areas, this technology can fill the gap between information request and its availability; however, more knowledge and skill is needed regarding the use of electronic communication-information resources.
