Naming in Characterization, Fetneh or Azadeh?

Ferdowsi and Nezami had both narrated the story of Bahram Gur and his maid in the hunting ground. This article is concerned withhow different process of naming a single character give rise to distinct narratives. The study of characterization with particular emphasis on the process of naming the characters is a major concern of this article. Bahram’s maid is called Azadeh in Ferdowsi’s tale and Fetneh in Nezami’s. The main question in this research is how characterization is intensified via symbolic names. To analyze this aspect the study of characterization and focalization is essential. According to the conclusion reached, the characters’ names are completely consistent with the genres of the narratives. In other words different perspectives and motivations of Ferdowsi and Nezami had led to creation of two different styles of narrating a single tale.
