Social Identity and Cultural Resistance; (The Study of illegal Cultural Goods in Tehran)

Abstract:
Considering the increasing importance of identity and consumption in contemporary sociology and the relationship between them, this article aims to study the relationship between social identity and consumption of illegal cultural goods in Tehran. The reason for this selection is the fact that consumption of cultural goods has been more dispensed with economic constraints than other areas, and can better represent the change trends and identity grouping. Theoretical framework of this article is based on Bourdieu and Giddens theories. The results of survey among 401 respondents in Tehran demonstrate that there is a positive relation between the level of cultural resistance and the consumption of illegal cultural goods. Moreover, there is a negative relation between ideology of traditional family and consumption of illegal cultural goods. Furthermore, the relationship between level of cultural capital and consumption some of illegal cultural goods such as satellite channels and C.D – D.V.Ds is reverse.
