Discriminant analysis of rumination, pathological anxiety and cognitive emotional regulation strategies based on positive and negative affectivity levels

Abstract:
Quality of life is a set of emotional and cognitive reactions against physical, psychological, and social situations; and is considered as the final outcome of clinical trials, interventions and health care services. Quality of life is an important factor in reducing symptoms of chronic mental and physical illnesses. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness therapy in quality of life among patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Therefore, in a quasi-experimental research with pre-test, post-test, and control group, 30 patients from Iranian MS Society were selected through convenience sampling method. The participants were assigned randomly into either experimental or control groups (n=15). The experimental group received eight sessions of mindfulness therapy, whereas the control group received no intervention. The participants in both groups completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM- IV Axis Disorders (SCID-I), and the Short- Form Quality of Life Questionnaire (Ware & Sherbourne, 1992) prior and after the intervention, and in a three months follow up. The results of analysis of covariance indicated that the mindfulness therapy was effective in increasing quality of life and it persisted at follow up. Given the findings of the present study, it is suggested that mindfulness training can improve the quality of life among patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
