Relationship between Attachment Styles and Marital Commitment in People with Marital Infidelity

Message:
Abstract:
Background
The main purpose of this research is to study the relationship between attachment styles and marital commitment in those who have been guilty of marital infidelity.
Methods
This was a correlational study, in which the research population included all the individuals who had referred to counseling centers in Tehran during the year 1395 (Persian calendar) with the presenting problem of marital infidelity. Of this population, 428 people were selected through convenient sampling. Data collection tools included Adults Attachment Styles Questionnaire (Shiver, 1997) and Marital Commitment questionnaire (Adams and Jones, 1997). The data were analyzed using correlational and multiple regression analysis.
Results
The findings indicated that attachment styles may account for and predict 13% of change in marital commitment in those who committed marital infidelity. Also, the Beta-coefficient for secure attachment was not meaningful.
Conclusions
Since marriage and mate selection is one of the most important decisions in life, and due to the predictive role of insecure (and anxious and avoidant) attachment styles, assessing these two factors in premarital counseling as well as teaching parents about parenting and attachment styles should be emphasized.
