Some common Cichlid disease and treatments

The aim of this study was introducing the common diseases and their treatments in Cichlids. Carefully purchasing, performing quarantine, optimum water quality preserving, feeding on balanced diet and preventing for stresses can help against diseases. Seven kinds of diseases were introduced according to cichlids behaviors. Ichthyophthirius multifili causes White Spot Disease among cichlids. Slimy skin or Blue Slime disease is overproduction of mucus by the fish, resulting in a bluish, slimy haze that gradually increases in area to eventually cover the fish body and fines. Several ciliated or flagellated protozoa belonging to the genera Ichthyobodo (formerly costia), Chilodonella, trichodina, and others could be affected mentioned fish. Next disease is Body fungus, or cotton wool disease. This disease is frequently encountered in cichlids because their aggressiveness often results in lots scales, wounds, and torn fins. The cause of fin rot can be bacterial, Gram-negative bacteria, mainly of the genus Flexibacer. The other common parasite disease of cichlids is Hexamitosis. Some species such as discus and angelfish appear particularly susceptible. Other disease is Malawi Bloat. This condition mainly affects planktivorous and aufwuchs-feeding cichlids from lakes Tanganyika and Malawi. The other famous cichlids disease is Holeinthehead or Head and Lateral line erosion (HLLE). This highly disfiguring malady begins as a series of small pits, usually near the eyes. The other common parasite of Cichlids is Nematods (Threadworms and Roundworms). Intestinal worms, particularly threadworms of the genus Capillaria are the cause of this disease. New world cichlids, particularly discus, eartheaters and angelfish, are the most commonly affected.
