The Classification of Similes in the Novels Chamedan (The Suitcase) and Varagh Pareha-ye Zendan (Scrap Papers from Prison) Written by Bozorg Alavi
Abstract:
Bozorg Alavi is one of the pioneer Iranian novelists who has applied figures of speech -especially simile- in his stories like all other writers. Using descriptive analysis, this study attempts to survey the similes used by Alavi in his two novels “Chamedan” and “Varagh Pareha-ye Zendan”. In the novel “Chamedan” which does not have an explicit left-wing perspective, Alavi uses simile mostly to describe women and nature; while in the novel “Varagh Pareha-ye Zendan”, his similes contain left-wing thoughts and they can be traced back to Marxist views. In his similes, Alavi has mostly described people, prison, things, and so on. Most of his metaphors include “compound simile”.
