US sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran
Various sanctions have been imposed on Iran. United States since 1980 and the United Nations Security Council and the EU since 2009 has been sanctioned Iran. Also the states have unilaterally imposed sanctions and restrictions on Iran, because of membership in the United Nations, according to Article 25 of the Charter and realize their national interests. Sanctions imposed on Iran are contrary to universal human rights principles and values due to direct and indirect effects on Iranian citizens. Because some unreasonable goals, such as the destabilization of the political system for illegitimate interests, the threat of force or even overthrowing a legal government have been considered by sanctions. So, with the assumption that the imposition of such sanctions is considered illegitimate and illegal by the organizations that do not qualify. By examining unilateral sanctions in international law, this article answers to the question that whether are the sanctions legal. As a result, it has been tried to review the United States’ unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
