Representing Security in the Urban Spaces Case Study: Living Skills Animations for Children)
Watching "animation", their favorite genre, children learn the basics of manner of interaction with their surroundings. The present article aims at looking into "living skills for children" from the perspective of urban security, and while focusing on the qualitative analysis and semiotic approach, it analyzes and examines the security components in the animated series. For this purpose, all the episodes of this animation series have been studied. In the series called "living skills for children", two distinctive types of images with conflicting features of urban space are presented: semi-private space and public space. Semi-private spaces are represented by components such as the lushness and mobility of residents, the beauty and softness of the physical space, intimate and face-to-face communication, law-orientation and personal discipline. Public space representations are often skewed and combined with features such as citizens’ alienation and strangeness, law evasion and environmental pollution, and men’s free movement. Such a representation paradigm creates a deep gap between what children see around them.
