Comparative Study of the Indian Myth of Vikram Urvashi by Kalidas and the Greek Myths
Kalidas, an Indian poet and dramatist who lived around 1500 years ago, describes the various states of love in a five-act dialogue-based drama called Vikram Urvashi. The theme of the drama is adapted from the ancient sources of Sanskrit literature, and its heroes are the mythical and fairy gods. The events in the story of Vikram Urvashi are carefully arranged by the play writer. They appear quite natural on the basis of a cause and effect structure. The main theme and content of the play are similar to that of several Greek myths such as Demeter and Persephone, Cupid and Psyche, and Prometheus. The similarities indicate the myths of the world share common themes. It also shows the cultural trades, wars, commerce, etc. contribute to the fusion of the myths of the nations.
