Abstract:

The word "Prolonged" in the Holy Verse “And If They Behold a Portent They Turn Away and Say: Prolonged Illusion” (54:2) is one of the words of the Holy Qur’an that the commentators have disagreed on its meaning and have expressed various opinions, because some people consider this word to have one semantic principle and some have considered several semantic principles. The disagreement in the meaning of "prolonged" has caused the commentators to disagree in interpreting this verse; continuous illusion, disappearing illusion, strong illusion, similar illusion, comprehensive illusion are some meanings of "prolonged illusion" in the interpretations. Given the widespread disagreement among commentators, it seems that relying on the role of linguistic elements in the text and its effect on recognizing the meaning and position of text production, the meaning of continuity can be preferred to other meanings. The linguistic and non-linguistic context of this verse shows that prolonged meaning must have a negative connotation, and among the negative meanings that have been proposed, the meaning of continuity is more in harmony with linguistic and non-linguistic context.
