A New Look at the Meaning of the Mahjuriyat of the Quran in Verse 30 of Surah al-Furqan Based on the Collocated Words and Context

One of the important verses of the Quran that deals with the interaction of Muslims with this holy book and in which the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) complains about the mahjuriyat of the Quran without specifying its time is verse 30 of Surah al-Furqan. In dealing with this word, the interpreters and translators of the Quran have generally spoken of ‘ignoring the Quran’, ‘abandoning it’, and ‘disobeying its commands’, and sometimes they have taken it to refer to the obscene and unfair remarks attributed to the Quran. Considering the words collocated with it such as “zalikah”, “qawm”, and “ittkhadhah”, the present study seeks to state that the purpose of the verse is not basically the abandonment of the Quran; it is rather embracement of the Quran, but in a distanced form. In verse 30 of Surah al-Furqan, is not stated what “mahjura” refers to, but according to the context of the verse and the example of “oppressor”, and according to the hadiths related to the companionship of the Quran and its explicators, as well as Hadith al-Thaqalayn, it is understood that the Quran has been dissociated from its explicators and companions, i.e. from the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) himself and the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.). Also, the time of the verse is not the Day of the Resurrection, and “qawm” in this verse does not refer to all Muslims until the Day of Judgment; it rather refers to the people of the Messenger of God, who considered the Quran sufficient and self-sufficient.
