Regarding the transport issues and its increasing demand in metropolitans, especially during peak hours, and the fundamental role of the Information Technology (IT) to ease the urban life, introduction of new solutions for amelioration of traffic situation through these technologies is possible. This role within the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) concept framework is very efficient in urban and interurban traffic control. In fact, ITS integrates information and communication technology to the vehicles and road networks through which passengers and freight are transported.
This paper aims at concepts, definitions, infrastructures and advantages of ITS and states the ITS situation in Iran and Tehran in brief. Iran needs ITS and implements this technology in some levels but the lack of ITS strategic plan in national level results in vulnerability of project progress and prevents to reach the expected result. Furthermore, concerning the need of ITS to technical knowledge in Traffic Transportation, ICT and organizational and management programs and strategies, it is required that planning and implementation of projects will be done by an appropriate experts of related fields.
