The Effectiveness of Metacognitive training on Cholesterol (LDL), Cholesterol (HDL) and Depression in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract:
Objective

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of the present day that is associated with increased cholesterol levels and psychological distress such as depression. Therefore, considering the negative effects of high cholesterol levels and depression in the process of controlling and treating diabetes, interventions to modify cholesterol and improve depression in this group are felt. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of metacognitive training on cholesterol (LDL), cholesterol (HDL) and depression in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Method

The research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test design. For the purpose of this study, 50 women with type 2 diabetes were selected at Shahid Shabani Diabetes Center in Isfahan and randomly assigned into two experimental (25) and control (25) groups. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and blood test for analysis cholesterol (LDL), cholesterol (HDL) was used for pre-test, post-test and two-month follow-up. After the pretest, the experimental group received metacognitive training sessions for 8 sessions of 90 minutes weekly and the control group was on the waiting list. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test.

Findings

There was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in cholesterol (LDL), cholesterol (HDL) and depression in the post-test (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Meta-cognitive training can be used to modify cholesterol (LDL) and cholesterol (HDL) and improve depression in patients with diabetes.
