Water and Landscape in Abbas Abad Garden

The Persian garden is the product of imposing Persian thoughts on nature and natural elements, including water and plants. From among the various elements, water plays such a significant role that the gardens are unimaginable without it. More specifically, water is a fundamental element organizing the gardens’ very green spaces. As one of the most beautiful gardens along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea, Abbas Abaad Garden, an entertaining site for King Abbas the Great, is located at the wooded slopes, 9 Km to Behshahr. Being built in woodlands, the water abundance and two-sided view created by the slopes are among unique characteristics of the garden. The present paper aims to present the role of landscape and water in planning the garden. It investigates the probable reasons for the construction of the garden on arduous wooded slopes as well as the roles played by water and the other elements in Abbas Abad. Using the historical field method and bibliographical approach, the author concludes that the two-sided view, landscape (Dam lake and the Caspian Sea), and water abundance created a unique form of garden in its natural environment.
