Epidemiologic investigation of maxillofacial fractures in admitted patients in Yazd trauma centers (2005-2011)

As a result of increased vehicle accidents, maxillofacial fractures increased too. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of maxillofacial fracture and its pattern in Yazd trauma centers in 2005-2011.

In this retrospective study, all the traumatized patients' profiles (n=1417) were investigated who referred to Yazd trauma centers. Demographic data and etiologic factors were extracted and radiographs were analyzed in regard to the fracture pattern. In fact, the results were statistically analyzed by SPSS software (version 16) applying Chi_ square and Exact Fisher Tests.

Patients aged between 1-84 years old. Fracture was more frequent in ages between 21-30 years (34.5%) and less between 41-50 years (4/6%). Most patients were males (77/1%). In fact, a significance difference was observed between males and females (p-value= 0.001). Nasal bone was the most common site of fracture (67.4%). Mandibular Condyle (31.47%) was the most frequent site in mandiblular fracture except people aged more than 50 years old whose body and symphysis were more involved. lefort type II (38.4%) was the most frequent site of maxillary fracture. The main cause of fracture was vehicle accident (61.2%) and the least cause was falling (11.4%) .

Maxillofacial Fractures often occur in the third decade of men`s lives and the main cause is vehicle accident. The most common fracture site is nasal bone that can be diagnosed by exact clinical examination.
