The Evaluation of Ghulām Aḥmad Parwīz’s (the Qur’ānist Thinker of the Indian Peninsula) Theory on the Repeatability of the Sunna Revelation

Although all Qur’ānists of the Indian Peninsula emphasize the Qur’ānism and needlessness to the sunna, they adopt different explications for this issue. Ghulām Aḥmad Parwīz, the contemporary Qur’ānist thinker of the Indian Peninsula, is one of the figures who has given in a new explication in this regard. His exposition of Qur’ānism is tied to his classification of the different types of revelation. In his opinion, the qur’ānic revelation is fixed, while the sunna revelation is repeatable. Since his theory about the repeatability of the sunna revelation is influenced by the Western intellectuals about the revelation and contradicts the Islamic theories, the study at hand aimed at examining and criticizing his theory. The results of this investigation show that Parwīz’s theory – which relies on the intellect, the qur’ānic verses, and the history of Islam – has four components. First, based on the qur’ānic verses, the orders of the Prophet (s) in the sunna realm (like those of any other human) is prone to mistakes. Second, the Prophet (s) and his Companions did not make efforts with regard to the sunna that was recorded in the form of Ḥadīths. Third, intellect, under the guidance of the Qur’ān, is sufficient in all conditions for the explanation of the details of religion.
