Study of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Effects on Roller Compacted Concrete Mechanical Properties with using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity in Cold Region

Abstract:
The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the possibility of making roller compacted concrete for road pavement with sufficient strength and bearing capacity and at the same time sustainable based on non-destructive test in freezing conditions in cold region. For this purpose, polypropylene fibers that have less sensitivity and higher resistance to corrosive and active agents of the environment have been used. In this study, polypropylene fibers of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 % by volume were added to the rolled compacted concrete samples. Then, its mechanical properties were evaluated for cold region conditions. To achieve the goal, laboratory tests of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, durability (melting and freezing cycles), water absorption and ultrasonic wave velocity have been performed. Generally, the results show that adding 0.3% of polypropylene fibers has increased the bearing capacity of roller concrete samples. Also, this amount of polypropylene fibers has minimized the percentage of weight loss in roller compacted concrete samples in thaw and freezing cycles condition. At the same time, it was observed that there is a good coordination between the results of the ultrasonic wave velocity test and other experiments, and it is possible to predict the behavior of roller concrete samples using this test. As the ultrasonic speed of roller concrete samples decreased with increasing number of thaw and freezing cycles due to increasing weight loss percentage.
