The Effect of Safety Management and Occupational Health in Reducing Laboratory Risks Based on Standard 10551 at Pasteur Institute of Iran

Laboratory staff are exposed to a variety of biological pathogens such as blood, body fluids, chemicals, etc. Given that different factors and accidents in each laboratory play a role in creating a risk to human health, their identification is essential for biosafety officials (or the technical manager of the laboratories). OHSAS 18111 has been developed in response to the needs of laboratory health centers and organizations for a standard of occupational safety and health management system by which they can evaluate or make their management system in the field of health and safety or more secure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of establishing occupational safety and health management in reducing or preventing laboratory hazards according to standard 18111 in Pasteur Institute of Iran. The present study is practical; the required data has been collected through survey and questionnaire. The statistical population of this research consists of employees and managers of thirteen departments of the Pasteur Institute of Iran. In this study, 115 people were selected as a sample for pre-test, and 57 people were selected as a sample in post- test (after establishing the 18111 standard). Research hypotheses were tested using SPSS software. The results showed that between establishing safety and health according to ISO 18111 standard by reducing the risk of accidents and occupational diseases through training (raising the level of knowledge and information in the field of health and safety), reducing laboratory risks, compliance with organizational safety policy and system improvement There is a significant relationship between safety management
