Investigation of compliance rate of preservation of non-printed information carriers in Tabriz University libraries and Medical Sciences Based on standard ISO 18925 [E]

Abstract:
Objective

The purpose of this study was to investigate the preservation compliance rate of non-printed information carriers in the libraries of Tabriz University and Medical Sciences of Tabriz University by standard 18925 ISO [E].

Methodology

A descriptive survey method is used. The statistical population of this study was 25 librarians of Tabriz University and Medical Sciences of Tabriz University. A Questionnaire made by the researcher was used to obtain the opinions of librarians of University of Tabriz and Tabriz University of Meidical Sciences. The questionnaire was based on standard ISO 18925 [E]. This questionnaire has 7 sections with 50 questions including: Environmental conditions (9 questions), Enclosures (9 questions), Preparation (3 questions), Storage housing (6 questions), Storage rooms (11 questions), Fire-protective storage (5 questions), Identification, inspection, and cleaning (7 questions). The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by experts and professors. In order to the analysis of data, descriptive statistics, and Microsoft Excel and SPSS software were used.

Findings

The findings showed that among the 25 studied libraries, the libraries of the Physical Education Faculty with mean of 3.57 and the Law Faculty with mean of 3.45 and the library of the Medicine Faculty with mean of 3.43, the most and libraries of the Economics Faculty With mean of 1.5 and the Faculty of Education and Psychology of Tabriz University with mean of 1.55 and the Midwifery and Nursing Faculty with the average of 1.75 points, the lowest average in the preservation of non-printed informational carriers according to the standard 18925 ISO [E]. Regarding to the compliance rate among of 7 elements of ISO 18925 [E] standard, the Storage elements with an average of 3.55 and Upkeep enclosures with mean of 3.6 have the highest and elements of Fire protection measures with an average of 1.8 and a Preparation process with mean of 1.69 average have the lowest accordance with the standard parts of ISO 18925 [E]. The average compliance rate of the other three items of standard ISO 18925 [E], including: Environmental conditions, Storage rooms and Identification, inspection, and cleaning, are 1.82, 2.82, and 2.85, respectively. The average of the total compliance rate of the seven elements of ISO 18925 [E] was 2.46 in the Tabriz University libraries and 2.5 in the Medical libraries. The results showed that most of the libraries of Tabriz University and Medical sciences in the level of protecting non-printed informational carriers do not use standards-compliant practices.

Conclusion

Findings of this study showed that most of the libraries surveyed do not use standard compliant in the preserving of non-print informational carriers, which this subject can be a challenge for the libraries in the future.
