Predicting depressive symptoms based on neuroticism with respect to the mediating role of resilience and mindfulness
Depression is one of the most common and fundamental problems in societies today. In addition to high prevalence, high recurrence rates, depression has many economic costs. Even the presence of a few mild symptoms of depression can lead to a significant reduction in performance and poor physical and mental health. Therefore, the present study was conducted to predict the symptoms of depression based on neuroticism with mediating variables of resilience and mindfulness.
The present study is a correlational design based on structural relationships, structural equation modeling. The study population was students studying at Qom University in the academic year of 2020 and 266 students were selected as available as a sample. Participants completed online the Beck Depression Inventory 2 (BDI-II), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Five-Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and the Neo-Personality Five-Factor Neuroscience Scale subscale. (NEO). Finally, the data were analyzed by SPSS and PLS software.
The results confirmed the relationship between depressive symptoms and variables of neuroticism, resilience, and mindfulness. The results also showed that neuroticism has a significant relationship with resilience and mindfulness. The research model, which is the prediction of depressive symptoms based on neuroticism with mediating variables of resilience and mindfulness was approved with a fit of 0.90.
According to the results of this study, mindfulness and resilience mediate the relationship between symptoms of depression and neuroticism. Based on this, the results of the present study can be used to prevent the symptoms of depression and also to treat it.
