Abstract:

In the ancient sources of weaponology as well as historical and heroic texts, sometimes, some weapons are mentioned, which today seem unfamiliar and strange to researchers and scholars of epic and heroic literature. One of these weapons is called "Saranj", which is apparently mentioned for the first time in the Zarrin Qaba-nameh - which is one of the long heroic Poetries of the Safavid era - and its corrector has stated that did not find this word in the dictionaries and texts, and its use is unique in Zarrin Qaba-nameh. The author of this essay, by researching in heroic texts, history and long adventurous tales, in addition to finding other examples of Sarinj, and describing the appearance and structure of this weapon, and how it is used by a certain class and group of heroes, conclude that the word Saranj was used for the first time, in an older and more original form, in the sixth and seventh centuries, and after that, it was changed to Saranj in a complex chain of translations.
